Introduction to Organic Cotton

Organic cotton represents a return to safe and sustainable practices. It is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment, replenishing and maintaining soil fertility, reducing the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilisers, and building biologically diverse agriculture. On top of this, it uses up to 90% less water than conventionally grown cotton, as it is almost entirely naturally irrigated.

The Truth Behind ‘Organic’ Labels

Not all products labelled as ‘organic’ are created equal. The global market is flooded with blended fabrics that contain only a small percentage of organic fibres, diluting the true value of what you pay for. This misleading labelling can often confuse consumers who strive to purchase genuinely organic products.

When exploring organic products, it’s essential to scrutinise items labelled as ‘organic’ that might only apply to one component, such as baby sleeping bags. Often, these are marketed as ‘organic’ due to their organic cotton outer layer, yet this overlooks the inner padding—predominantly made from polyester wadding in over 95% of cases. Always check the full composition to ensure every part of the product aligns with genuine organic standards.

What Does GOTS Really Mean?

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognised as the world’s leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibres. It defines high-level environmental criteria along the entire organic textiles supply chain and requires compliance with social criteria as well:

  • GOTS ‘Made with Organic’: Products must contain a minimum of 70% organic fibres.
  • GOTS ‘Organic’: Products must contain a minimum of 95% organic fibres.
  • No genetically modified seeds are permitted in the cultivation of GOTS-certified fibres.
  • Wastewater treatment and the use of chemicals during processing are strictly monitored to ensure environmental safety.

The Misleading Nature of Other Standards

Be wary of less stringent standards that allow for a product to be labelled as ‘organic’ when only a minor fraction of its material meets the requirements. These lesser standards dilute the integrity of organic claims and may deceive consumers looking to make healthier and more responsible environmental choices.

Be an Informed Buyer

As a consumer, it’s vital to understand these distinctions. Always check for the GOTS certification to ensure the organic cotton products you buy are truly beneficial to both the environment and society.

Stay informed and choose genuinely organic products. Check for certifications and understand labels as you shop. It’s not just a purchase—it’s a contribution to sustainability and the health of humanity.
