Polyester and nylon might be the default for kids’ swimwear – quick-drying, stretchy, low price point – but beneath the surface, it’s a fabric with a toxic footprint.

Made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate), the same plastic used in water bottles and PA plastics, conventional swimwear is made from synthetic petroleum-based fabric that releases microplastics and toxic compounds every time it’s worn or washed. For children, whose skin and systems are still developing, the risks are even greater.

Why heat + synthetic fabrics = a toxic combo for swimwear

Swimwear is worn in the exact conditions that accelerate the release of harmful substances:

  • Heat from the sun and warm water opens skin pores, increasing absorption of chemicals.
  • Sweat, chlorine, and saltwater break down plastic fibres, causing them to shed more microplastics.
  • Synthetic fabrics emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), especially when exposed to heat, which contributes to indoor and surface-level air pollution – yes, even outdoors, directly around the child.
  • Recycled plastic swimwear is likely to contain higher levels of toxic chemicals than virgin plastics due to high heat and contamination in the recycling process, so it’s not a healthy option.

Why conventional plastic swimwear is toxic for children

Children’s skin is up to 30% thinner than an adult’s, with greater permeability. In practical terms, this means:

  • More toxins are absorbed through the skin
  • Irritation is more likely, especially in sensitive areas
  • Heat rash, itching, eczema and contact dermatitis are often triggered by synthetic fabric blends

Non-toxic swimwear? Organic cotton fabrics for kids
