We’re all becoming increasingly aware of the environmental damage being done by mass consumerism, and Black Friday plays a big part in this destruction. As consumers, parents, uncles and aunts we have a huge responsibility to help protect our planet for future generations. You may have seen that more and more brands have chosen to opt out of Black Friday in recent years because of the harm that this huge shopping day has on the world. However, we think that if eco brands opt out of this huge shopping day it could actually do more environmental damage than good, and here’s why:

WHY IS BLACK FRIDAY HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT?

Black Friday traditionally encourages mass consumerism of products with short life cycles which are used for a limited amount of time and then discarded too early, adding to environmental waste and often toxic land pollution as these products break down, releasing harmful chemicals into the air, water and soil. It’s thought that when products become under-priced it encourages people to buy them who may not need them, or will treat them as more disposable than if they had paid full price for them.

HOW CAN BLACK FRIDAY BE MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

Consumers like a discount, and that’s never going to change. In our view, if all sustainable and eco brands opted out of Black Friday altogether, then consumers would have an added incentive to buy cheap, disposable and environmentally harmful products. So we think it’s really important that on the biggest shopping day of the year, shoppers should be presented with sustainable buying options.

WHAT IS GREEN FRIDAY?

Green Friday is a movement to encourage consumers to become more aware of the environmental impact of their shopping behaviour. Brands taking part in Green Friday offer discounts on their sustainable products while at the same time pledge to give back to the environment in some way.
